Chinese uses characters, which cannot be sounded out, while English words use the alphabet, which allows the speaker to sound out the word because it is a phonetic language
This is because throughout their history, characters and their pronunciations have evolved. As a result, some characters sound completely different from how you would expect them to! Sometimes, characters that share the same phonetic compound may still be pronounced differently.
