A student set up an experiment to investigate osmosis as shown in Figure 9
The student used visking tubing which is a partially permeable membrane.
The student put 25cm (cubed) of 20% sucrose solution into visking tube 1 and 25cm (cubed) of distilled water into visking tube 2. Both tubes were placed in a 5% sucrose solution and left for 1 hour.

Explain how (will they increase/decrease in size) and why( will water be leaving the potato by
osmosis or moving into the palato by osmosis) tube 1 and tube 2 would look different after one
hour.

Tube 1 would swell and become larger and tube 2 would stay the same. The reason for this is that because of osmosis, water will enter tube 2 in order to dilute the sucrose.
