During WWII, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the Sixth and Ninth of August 1945, respectively.
The United States needed to end WWII without invading the Japanese homeland because they would have suffered massive losses.
As a result, President Truman decided to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to scare the Japanese into submission. Dropped on the 6th and the 9th of August, the bombings worked and Japan surrendered.
