It is known that humanity in society has been highly influenced by mythology, religion and other factors that are out of sight and therefore are not as relevant in a current society inclined towards science.

However, taking this trend into account, it could be believable that the "cave society" had one or two shamans who were considered the only ones who could paint in caves and thus communicate with higher entities.

Due to the above, it is possible that Madhu's theory is supported, for which said option would be the correct one.
