The Dome is believed in Islam to commemorate the night journey of the prophet Mohammad.
It is the oldest Islamic monument that is known to exist.

What these traditions shows is that the area is believed to belong to the different religions given that it is symbolic to them.

The Jews believe the Dome to be theirs given that Abraham existed first before Mohammad, while the Arabs believe the Dome to be where Muhammad ascended to heaven.
