By way of introduction, suffice it to state that:
One of Mark Twain's most renown and significant books of fiction is Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
The book recounts the escape of Huckleberry Finn from his abusive father (who is a drun.kard) as well as Huck and Jim, a fugitive slave, going on an exciting adventure down the Mississippi River.
In the thirty third chapter, one of the use of exaggeration by Twain is seen during the dialogue between Tom and his friend Huck.
In the opening paragraph of Chapter thirty-three, of the novel, Twain describes Huck's surprise in seeing Tom.
He states: "...and his mouth opened up like a trunk, and stayed so: and he swallowed two or three times like a person that's got a dry throat,..."
Obviously, no person's mouth can be as "wide as a trunk", hence this is one of the hyperbole. Recall, that hyperboles are not to be taken literarily.
This use of hyperbole, is Twains way of communicating, albeit, in a sublime way, the depth of relationship between Huck and Jim.
