The actions he takes that increases the conflict are:

  1. He refuses to heed the advice about the cold
  2. He builds a fire directly under a tree

Who is a Protagonist?

This refers to the main character of a story that faces some conflicts and challenges with an antagonist who constantly opposes him.

Hence, we can see that the results of the protagonist's actions are:

  • He does not have a fire to warm himself and dies
  • A branch falls from the tree above and extinguishes the fire

The antagonists of the story are:

  • The hubris of the unknown man
  • The snow/cold

The two actions that the antagonist takes that increases the conflict are:

  • The fall of the branch due to the cold
  • The stubbornness and pride of the man to continue moving despite the warnings of the people he met.

The climax of the story happens when the branch puts off the fire and the man becomes desperate to start a new fire before he gets frozen to death.

The choice the protagonist made to change the course of the conflict was to light a fire that he held to his lips.

The falling action occurs when the unknown man has finally accepted his death after he tries running to restore feeling to his hands, trying to kill his dog, and many other actions.
