A plot diagram or map is a visual depiction of the story's plot.
- A story plot diagram is a line graph representing the story's events, with the beginning of the story on the left, the story's progression to the right, and the story's conclusion on the right.
- A story's plot is the development of its events. The storyline elements in almost every story are the same. There are six elements to a story:
Exposition: In a storyline, exposition establishes the time, place, primary character, supporting cast, and atmosphere of the narrative.
Conflict: The main character is faced with an issue, crisis, challenge, dilemma, or impediment.
Rising Action: number of solutions to the conflict that the protagonist tries
Climax: The story's climax is when the action peaks, the main character and the issue are resolved, and the story takes a turn for the better.
Falling Action: The Falling action includes the resolution of all narrative issues, the fallout from the climax, and a look back at how the main character has changed.
Resolution: The resolution, whether it is a joyful or sad ending, entertaining or terrifying, gratifying or unsatisfied, is where the plot ends.
- We can practise creating a plot diagram by using the most straightforward stories, like Little Miss Muffet.
1. What is the beginning of the story? Who occupies the central role? What is the setting? We meet Miss Muffet at the outset of the story as she eats cottage cheese while sitting on a hassock (tuffet).
2. What conflict does our main character encounter in the rising action? She had to deal with the spider that just showed up.
3. The way our main character resolves her issue is the story's climax. Miss Muffet decides to flee in order to resolve her issue. Miss Muffet's departure marks the story's dramatic conclusion.
