The most crucial thing to understand is that social contagion nearly always plays a role in how peaceful protests degenerate into angry ones. The term "social contagion" describes how unsuitable actions spread when people in a crowd witness others doing them. In a crowd of thousands, a few people's acts may justify the violence. Additionally, when we see others doing it, we get the impression that it is okay to do it now.
Social contagion may be used for good or bad.
- Good: Everyone enjoys joining "the wave" during a football game. It often begins with one or two rowdy supporters, but as word spreads and it appears to be a cheap pastime to participate in, the numbers quickly increase into the thousands.
- Bad: Sadly, crowds and violence share the same mindset. When surrounded by others, however, one can reason that the risk of breaking store windows is minimal since there is safety in numbers, even if it might seem unimaginable when one is alone.
