Gingerich name the ancestral whale as Basilosaurus.
Gingerich spent years searching for whale fossils that would reveal the type of ankle bones that they and their predecessors had. He discovered the bones of Basilosaurus, an extinct whale that resembled a sea serpent, in 1991. It was 40 million years old. According to Dr. Gingerich, the finding of functional hind limbs on a type of whale, Basilosaurus isis, was the most unexpected part of the discovery.
Gingerich discovered fossils in 2000 that supported the theory put out by genetic scientists that whales descended from artiodactyls, the progenitors of hippos and camels, rather than mesonychids, extinct wolf-like creatures.
