According to walker’s (1984) cycle of violence theory, battering is cyclical in nature, occurring in three ordered (in order) stages of tension building, acute battering, and loving contrition.
Understanding the cycle of violence is essential to putting an end to domestic abuse and other forms of interpersonal violence. The cycle of violence goes through three stages:
The tension-building stage comes first. In this stage, the batterer becomes tense and tension starts to rise. The victim of abuse could now feel as if they are treading water.
The physical abuse takes place during the real explosion phase, which comes next. A few minutes to several hours may pass during it.
The honeymoon period comes third. The offender may express remorse or act as if nothing happened, but they are still interested in making up and may even make a pledge to never do it again. The cycle is continued, though, as the tension almost invariably begins to rise once more.
