We asked 456 high school students who had tried marijuana what led them to start using it, why they continued using it, and why they stopped using it. Parental disapproval was a more powerful motivator to stop marijuana usage among high school students than peer condemnation. Similar trends can be seen in data on young adults. People who take drugs for social reasons are more likely to stop than people who simultaneously use drugs for psychological reasons.
