In ancient Asia, Ashoka encouraged the spread of Buddhism. Ashoka, who is regarded by many as one of India's great kings, widened Chandragupta's realm such that it extended from what is now Afghanistan in the west to what is now Bangladesh in the east.
Ashoka, the third emperor of the Mauryan dynasty, is widely regarded as the first leader to accept Buddhism and, consequently, the first significant patron of Buddhist art. Ashoka underwent a dramatic conversion to Buddhism following the carnage that ensued from his conquest of the village of Kalinga. He accepted the dharma, or practise of the Four Noble Truths as taught by the Buddha.
