The Spanish were the first to invade the continent of North America and its inhabitants in 1565 in St. Augustine, Florida, followed by the British in 1587 when the Plymouth Company founded a town in present-day Vir ginia that they named Roanoke. Following the strange failure of this initial settlement, the London Company established a presence in what would eventually become Jamestown, Vir ginia, in 1606.

From there, the Dutch established a colony in modern-day New York in 1609 before the French founded Quebec in 1608. While Native Americans battled new diseases brought by the Europeans and the slave trade during this time, they also resisted European attempts to seize land and power.
