Mohandas  Gandhi joined INC after returning to India in 1920 on the request of his mentor Gopal Krishna Gokhle.

He first participated in Kheda Movement (1917-1918) , Champaran (1917) movement. Later on gave leadership to independence movement - Non cooperation (1920), Civil Disobedience (1930), Quit India Movement (1942), Khilafat movement ( 1919).

He believed in non-violent revolt and was influenced by the idea of John Ruskin, Bhagavat Gita, Bible , Emerson Thoreu, Leo tolstoy.

He is called "Father of the nation" in  modern India. Gandhi advocated independence for India using non- violence resistance form which he called Satyagraha. This helped India to gain independence from British.
