The conquistadors were driven primarily by the desire for gold
Who were the Conquistadors?
In the 16th century, the Spanish crown paid mercenary warriors known as conquistadors to conquer and colonize Mexico, Central America, and South America. Remember that not all conquistadors were Spanish or Portuguese and that they were not regular troops. Some of them were Greek, German, and even Italian. The condottieri in the Italian republics would be an analogous historical entity. Many of the conquistadors were from lowly aristocratic families, and their journeys were private endeavors. Many of them had to provide their own equipment because they lacked official military training (although others had been in the military before).
There were many notable conquistadors and explorers, but Hernán Cortés and his cousin Francisco Pizarro from Extremadura were the most well-known.
