Groupthink is a phenomenon that happens when a group of well-intentioned individuals decides something irrationally or ineffectively because they feel pressure to conform or they think disagreement is impossible. Groupthink has a number of primary causes. These include group cohesion, general group isolation, group leadership, and stress related to decision-making. Due to interpersonal pressure to conform, strong degrees of cohesiveness reduce the amount of verbal conflict within a close-knit group.
Another way to prevent groupthink is to hold a mock trial or mock trials. Getting mock jury opinions from individuals who are not on your trial team can first change thinking by bringing up issues that group members may have subconsciously overlooked and perhaps even by discovering issues that no one in the group had considered.
