Jackson supported states' rights and a strict interpretation of the Constitution, but he also thought that when the federal government was given authority by the Constitution, it had to be paramount. Jackson also respected the Union and was unwilling to see it weaken or fall apart.
Being a proud self-made "common" man, he claimed that the bank had a bias in favor of the wealthy. He represented the bank as a "hydra-headed" monster because he was a westerner who was concerned about the growth of eastern commercial interests and the emigration of species from the west.
