Colonists and the Wampanoag form an alliance as a result of Squanto's negotiations with them.
Squanto was from a hard-working, resourceful village. His tribe's women raised corn, beans, and squash while the men went on fishing expeditions up and down the coast. The Patuxet people and the European immigrants typically got along before the early 1600s, but it didn't endure for very long.
The Wampanoag chief Massasoit negotiated an alliance with the Pilgrims, promising not to harm one another, with the help of Squanto serving as interpreter. In the case of an attack from another tribe, they also pledged to support one another. Squanto was referred to by Bradford as "a particular tool sent of God."
