You should write your dialogue allowing one character to respond to the other's speech. In that case, you can show the daughter showing the reasons why the mother should go to the matric dance, while the mother counters these reasons and explains why she shouldn't go.
You can see a small example of how this can be done below.
"Mom, have you decided what outfit you're going to wear to the dance?"
"No. Because I'm not going to the dance."
"Why not?"
"Because these dances are very tiring and I prefer to stay at home, wrapped in a blanket, watching my favorite show."
