The Columbian Expedition of 1893 was a massive fair that was held to celebrate the 400 year anniversary of Christopher Columbus arriving in the Americas and thereby setting up the foundation for the United States to eventually become a nation.

The fair ended up very successfully and this was important to the United States because it led to an increase in American consumerism as well as investment into the economy which led to the United States becoming such a huge industrial powerhouse.

For Chicago, the city's image was significantly improved and this led to much investment flowing into the city such that it grew in both wealth and population.
