If the liquid in a mercury barometer were replaced with water of density 1000kgm-3, what would the height of the water column be, given that the atmospheric pressure is 101300nm-2

Respuesta :

If the liquid in a mercury barometer were replaced with water of density 1000kgm-3, the height of the water column will be 10.3m

A mercury barometer Measures atmospheric pressure by determining the height of a mercury column supported in a sealed glass tube.

Height of mercury column = 76cm

Let the height of the water column  be 'h'

As per the law of fluid dynamics, pressure applied by fluid of height h is equal to hρg

Now, when the fluid in the barometer will be in equilibrium, the height of the fluid column will be equal to the atmospheric pressure.

ρ(Hg) × g × 76 = ρ(Water) x g x h

Substituting the values, we have

13600 x 9.8 x 76 = 1000 x 9.8 x h

[tex]h = \frac{13600 x 76}{1000}[/tex]

h = 1033 cm or 10.3m
