With the collapse of the soviet union and  to address problems caused by the dissolution the eastern European nations joined the European union.

The process of internal disintegration within the Soviet Union (USSR) that led to the collapse of the nation and its federal government as a sovereign state, resulting in its component republics regaining full sovereignty on December 26, 1991, is known as the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

These abrupt developments brought up the question of how Central and Eastern Europe should be organized. In order to ensure their security, the former USSR states looked to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and, in particular, NATO.

They discovered a support system to stand up for democracy and human rights at the Council of Europe. The European Community, the group to which they aspired, provided assistance to them thus joining the European Union .
