Equal rights for women was the subject of an amendment that was sent to the states but never ratified.

An amendment must be presented by two-thirds of the House and Senate, or by a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the state legislatures, in order to be accepted as part of the Constitution. A new amendment must have the vote of three-quarters of the states in order to be ratified by the states.

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution, is based on the fundamental idea that gender should not be a factor in determining whether a man or woman has legal rights. It would invalidate numerous state and federal laws that discriminate against women.

This amendment was ratified much later .
