After Augustinian monk and navigator Andrés de Urdaneta developed the tornaviaje, or return route, from the Philippines to Mexico, the Spanish established the Manila galleon trade route in 1565. In that year, Urdaneta and Alonso de Arellano completed the first successful round journey.
