The Sui and Tang dynasties' conquest of additional territories to the west as they expanded China was another factor in the development of Buddhism in the country. There were many Buddhists among the locals, and they travelled throughout China promoting their faith.

The Tang period marked the height of Buddhism in China. Even though the Tang emperors were often Daoists themselves, they preferred Buddhism because it had grown to be quite well-liked. The Tang government expanded its authority over monasteries, monk ordination, and their legal standing.

It is generally accepted that Buddhism came to China during the Han Dynasty through the Silk Road. Yuezhi monks started travelling with the merchant caravans and preaching their religion along the Silk Road after trade and travel with them were established. At that time, the Yuezhi were being pressed southward toward India.
