Feminization of poverty  is the term for the trend in which women represent an increasing proportion of the poor.

The term "feminization of poverty" describes a pattern of rising living-standard disparities between men and women as a result of the widening gender gap in poverty. This phenomenon is mostly related to the fact that women and children are over represented in groups with lower socioeconomic level compared to men in the same group. The family and household structure, employment, sexual assault, education, climate change, and health are some of the factors that contribute to the feminization of poverty.

The persistent gender stereotypes in many countries limit the opportunity for women to participate in the workforce and their communities. When coupled with a low foundational income, this can result in a cycle of poverty and a problem that affects multiple generations.
