A variation in gene function that does not involve a change in DNA sequence but can be inherited is an epigenetic variation.

DNA is Deoxyribonucleic acid, a type of nucleic acid. It is the genetic material of maximum living organisms. It is a double-stranded helical structure made up of monomer unit called nucleotide. The nucleotide is composed of deoxyribose sugar, nitrogenous base and phosphate group. The nitrogenous bases of DNA are: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine.

Epigenetic variations are those that do not alter the sequence of a gene, but can alter the gene expression. These variations can be reversed and inherited as well. The three types of epigenetic changes are: methylation, histone modification and non-coding RNA action.
