The role of mitosis is to produce identical copies of diploid cells of the somatic cells in chromosomal inheritance. The meiosis is responsible for halving the chromosome number during the gamete formation.

Mitosis is also called equational division. It produces the exact copies of the cells, without changing the chromosome number or DNA content of the cells. All the somatic cells are divided using mitotic division. It occurs in four phases: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase.

Meiosis is the reductional division. It halves the chromosome number in daughter cells. Meiosis occurs in two parts: Meiosis I and Meiosis II. Meiosis II is identical to Mitosis. The Prophase  stage pf meiosis is the longest one.
