The fourth and last stage in Piaget's theory is the formal operational stage. Though Piaget does note that some people may never reach this stage of cognitive development, it starts around the age of 11 to 12 and lasts into adulthood.
The capacity to develop hypotheses and conduct systematic tests on them in order to find a solution to a problem characterises the formal operational stage. In addition to being able to reason abstractly, someone in the formal stage may comprehend the shape or structure of a mathematical problem.
