The nurse should lower the head of the bed and ask the mother to turn to her left side if she notices late decelerations in the active stage of her labor.

Late deceleration is the gradual decrease in the fetal heart rate generally followed by uterine contractions. It is usually caused by uteroplacental insufficiency. The uterine blood vessels cannot supply enough blood to the placenta due to the suppression experienced by uterine contractions. The fetus, thus, doesn't get enough oxygen supply.

In this case, the nursing interventions to be followed are as follows:

● Lower the head of the bed and ask the mother to turn to her left side so that the heart could provide an efficient blood supply

● Introduction of artificial oxygen to the mother

If the above interventions do not work, the last alternative to deal with this condition is through performing a C-section. Once the baby is out of the body, the deoxygenated baby can be supplied with natural or artificial oxygen outside the mother's body.
