A common misconception is that platelets are cells. what would you say to a student who asks you if platelets are cells?

Respuesta :

A common misconception is that platelets are cells. The student should be told that platelets are not cells but pieces of cell fragments.

Platelets or thrombocytes include tiny, colorless cell fragments in the blood which is responsible for the formation of clots and thereby arresting bleeding.

Platelets are synthesized in the bone marrow, i.e. the sponge-like tissue present within the bones. Bone marrow consists of stem cells which evolve into red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs) as well as platelets.

Although platelets are created in the bone marrow, as in the case of RBCs and many WBCs, they are created in a separate bone marrow which makes them cell fragments.
