The south made the choice to break from the union but I do not think they need to be punished by the North because at that time they had several concerns which were not being addressed.
The Union is a term used to describe the Northern part of the United states which was led by Abraham Lincoln during the American civil War. The south at that time was referred to as the confederacy and it was comprised of the first eleven states to breakaway from the union.
The confederacy had some concerns one of which was the use of slave labor because at that time, a large percentage of the economy of the south was based on Agriculture. The North on the other hand was more industrialized.
