South Carolina's refusal to pay taxes on goods it did not produce caused the nullification crisis in 1832
The Nullification Crisis erupted on November 24, 1832, when the South Carolina legislature passed an Ordinance of Nullification declaring the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 null and void within South Carolina's state borders.
Although the nullification crisis was ostensibly about South Carolina's refusal to collect federal tariffs, many historians believe it was more about growing Southern fears about the Northern abolitionist movement.
South Carolina's attempts to persuade other Southern states to join in nullification were a total failure. The Force Bill was passed by Congress on March 1, 1833.
