The fundamental attribution error (FAE) is the phenomenon in which people overestimate internal influences or factors that result in the behaviour of others while underestimating external influences or factors that are beyond a person's control when explaining their behaviour. FAE occurs when a classmate fails an exam and you believe it is due to factors within his or her control (such as laziness, lack of ability, and low intelligence) rather than external factors beyond his or her control (family crises, illness, etc.).
