Similarities can be found between the Appreciative Advising (AA) model in Figure 1 and the Five-Stage Interview Structure (IS) in the models developed by Bloom et al. (2009) and Ivey et al (2010). The adviser aids the student in feeling at ease and welcome at the start of the advising visit by verbal and nonverbal behaviours and cues in the Disarm (AA) and Relationship (IS) stages.
The adviser's efforts during the Discover (AA) and Story & Strengths (IS) phases are concentrated on learning more about the student's background, character traits, and capacity for problem-solving. Both the Dream (AA) and Goals (IS) stages are meant to encourage the student to express his or her thoughts for the future and the goals that will help them come true.
The Design (AA) and Restory (IS) stages give the student and advisor the chance to reframe the student's present circumstances and create a strategy to implement the student's goals. The student then implements the plan(s) from the advising session during the Deliver (AA) and Action (IS) stages.
The Don't Settle stage in the Appreciative Advising model is the sole phase that is inconsistent between the two models. The reason for leaving this stage out of the Five-Stage Interview model is because the counsellor will unavoidably follow-up on a client's past conversations and actions during subsequent meetings, even though in some respects it might be argued that it is inherent in the model's guiding principles.
