Convection is the process in which material that is heated deep within the asthenosphere rises to displace cooler, less dense material near the surface.

The Earth's upper mantle contains the ductile and mechanically feeble asthenosphere. It stretches as far as 700 km beneath the lithosphere, between 80 and 200 km below the surface. However, the asthenosphere's lower border is not clearly defined.

The asthenosphere mostly contains solid materials however there is also the presence of molten regions. The asthenosphere's molten regions can be found, for instance, around mid-ocean ridges and subduction zones which is due to the heat of the core.
