Following the demise of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century CE, the Byzantine Empire served as the eastern extension of the Roman Empire. Between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Ottoman conquest in 1453, it persisted.

The Byzantine Empire and Emperor Justinian continued certain practices of the old Roman Empire while changing some others.

  • Continuities: The Byzantine Empire initially upheld a number of Roman legal and governmental structures as well as elements of Roman culture. Byzantines referred to themselves as "Romans." It took a long time after the fall of the Empire for the phrase "Byzantine Empire" to be coined.
  • Changes: The Byzantine Empire moved its capital from Rome to Constantinople, converted to Christianity, and switched from Latin to Greek as the official language.

The Byzantine Empire persisted into the fifteenth century despite the seeming doom, going through additional changes.
