Buddhists believe that, a Bodhisattva is an enlightened being who has chosen to stay behind in this world to help others.

The English term enlightenment is the Western translation of numerous Buddhist terms,  most notably bodhi and vimutti. Buddhists believe that human life may be a cycle of suffering and rebirth, however that if one achieves a state of enlightenment (nirvana), it's possible to flee from this cycle forever. Siddhartha Gautama was the primary person to succeed in this state of enlightenment and was, and continues to be nowadays, called Buddha.

Bodhisattva are enlightened people who have put off entering paradise and help others to attain enlightenment.
