Adrenocorticotropic hormone is a polypeptide tropic hormone produced by and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. The main function of this hormone is to regulate the steroid hormone cortisol which in turn is released by the adrenal gland. It regulates blood pressure, blood sugar, the immune system, and the response to stress. This test can help find the causes of certain hormone problems.

Increase in cortisol levels can also be due to stress since it simulates adrenocorticotropic hormone production. High levels of ACTH may be also due to emotional or physical stress , diseases such as Addison's disease , Cushing's disease or a tumor outside the pituitary.
