It is estimated that approximately 2.4% of the US population is diagnosed with avoidant personality disorder. It seems to effect both men and women equally.

Avoidant personality disorder features, like those of other personality disorders, may be detected in childhood and typically begin to cause discomfort in adolescence or early adulthood.
