The main character in the short story "Rules of the Game" is Waverly, also called Meimei or "little sister" by her family. Waverly is American, but her parents are Chinese immigrants.
Waverly has to learn to rules to two different cultures, Chinese and American. Of course, the differences between them will end up clashing as they both influence Waverly's decisions.
For example, Chinese culture teaches Waverly to be obedient and quiet:
- I was six when my mother taught me the art of invisible strength... "Bite back your tongue,"... At home, she said, "Wise guy, he not go against wind. In Chinese we say, Come from South, blow with wind-poom!-North will follow. Strongest wind cannot be seen."
However, American culture teaches Waverly to stand up for herself and talk back to her mother:
- I knew it was a mistake to say anything more, but I heard my voice speaking, "Why do you have to use me to show off? If you want to show off, then why don't you learn to play chess?"
Her double cultural background causes conflict in Waverly's life, and she must learn to manage the different situations that come up.
