What is the range of oxidation states for carbon? Name a compound in which carbon has its highest oxidation state and one in which it has its lowest.

Respuesta :

Methane (CH4) has lowest oxidation number and tetroxoiridium (IX) has highest oxidation state.

About Carbon atom:

  • The name ‘carbon’ comes from a Latin word called ‘carbo’ which suggests charcoal.

it's the fourth most abundant element in this universe. it's the second most abundant element in our body(1st is Oxygen). it's atomic number is 6( according to the periodic table).

  • Carbon is represented by the symbol C and  it's also a non-metal.
  • Carbon consists of:
  1. 6protons
  2. 6electrons
  3. 6neutrons
  • Carbon atom is considered to be most special and unique because of it's property that it can bond with other carbon atoms to an almost unlimited degree.

Physical properties of carbon:

Physical properties of carbon are:

  • The physical properties of this element vary consistent with its allotropes.
  • The two major allotropes of carbon are as follow: diamond and graphite.
  • Diamond is transparent and has no colour.
  • On the opposite hand graphite is an opaque and black in colour.
  • Diamond is most hardest substance known, graphite is soft and spongy in texture.
  • Diamond isn't able to conduct electricity at all while graphite is a very good conductor of electricity.
  • Both allotropic elements are solid and non-gaseous.
  • Also both the allotropes are insoluble in water.
  • It doesn't get melted when heated, it sublimes which is it turns to gaseous form.

Uses of carbon in daily life:

  • It makes up for 18% of the  physical body .
  • Sugar, glucose, proteins etc. are these all made from carbon.
  • The food we eat contains a crucial source of energy which is called carbohydrate.
  • Carbon in its diamond form is employed to make jewellery.
  • Amorphous carbon is employed to make inks and paints.
  • It is also used in batteries.
  • Graphite is used as the lead in the pencils.
  • One of the most important uses of carbon is "carbon dating".
  • we will actually use carbon to measure the age of things.
  • Scientists use a rare sort of carbon which is called Carbon-14 in order to measure the age of fossils, bones etc.

Now,

Range of oxidation number of Carbon varies from -4 to +4 .

Now,

The lowest oxidation number is −4, which is CH₄ (methane).

The highest oxidation number is +9, which is tetroxoiridium.

Thus from the above conclusion we can say that, Methane (CH₄) has lowest oxidation state and tetroxoiridium  has highest oxidation state.
