To assess the dorsalis pedis artery, the nurse would use the tips of three fingers and apply light pressure to the Anterior surface of the foot near the ankle joint.

At the level of the ankle, the tibialis anterior artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery. Before emitting a lateral branch, the arcuate artery, it passes over the tarsus and is partially covered by the extensor hallucis brevis. The metatarsal arteries of the second, third, and fourth toes all originate from this artery.

  1. On the dorsum of the foot, in the first intermetatarsal gap, directly lateral to the great toe's extensor tendon, the dorsalis pedis pulse can be felt.
  2. Behind and beneath the medial malleolus, one can feel the posterior tibial pulse.
  3. Gently flex the knee and deep-palpate the popliteal fossa in the midline to feel for the popliteal pulse.
