The theme that can be found in "The Aged Mother" includes the theme of selfishness, power, honesty, wisdom, forgiveness, change, and love.

What is a theme?

It should be noted that the theme simply means the underlying message that can be found in a story.

It should be noted that the story was narrated in the third person. In the story, the ruler requested that the people should kill their elderly parents as he didn't see them as being beneficial to the region.

The story emphasized the bond that existed between the mother and her son and the wisdom of the elderly. The poor farmer couldn't kill his mother.

The ruler then forced the people to make a rope that was made of ashes. They couldn't do it but the mother helped her son. Then, the ruler realized that he was wrong.

Matsuo Basho develops and individualizes either the son’s and the mother’s perspective. In the end, it was illustrated that the wisdom of the elderly is important as well as the strength of the youth.
