Kelp an important group of protists that produce algin, a substance useful to humans.
The order Laminariales is made up of kelps, which are big brown algal seaweeds. About 30 distinct genera are present. Although it may appear to be a plant, kelp is actually a heterokont, or collection of unrelated organisms.
It is believed that kelp first appeared in the Miocene, between 5 and 23 million years ago, and that it grows in "underwater forests" (kelp forests) in shallow oceans. The organisms require water that is nutrient-rich and between 6 and 14 °C (43 and 57 °F) in temperature. The genera Macrocystis and Nereocystis, which can grow up to half a meter every day and eventually reach heights of 30 to 80 meters, are renowned for their rapid development (100 to 260 ft).
The term "kelp" was closely related to seaweeds that could be burned throughout the 19th century.
