The condition of farming was appalling and yet a significant amount of workforce came from the farming community. In early 1900s, there were about 24 million people in the farming community.

Over the years this number has increased significantly. In 1999, the total workforce in the farming community was 139 million.

However, there were many significant challenges that  American farmers faced in the 1900s. They contended with economic hardships born out of rapidly declining farm prices, prohibitively high tariffs on items they needed to purchase, and foreign competition.
