The mammalian trachea and esophagus both connect to the A. pharynx
Pharynx is the region where the mammalian trachea and esophagus both connect.
Pharynx is funnel shaped pathway for the food to enter the food pipe.
During the process of swallowing of the food or the bolus, the bolus reach the pharynx and with the successive movement of the gut, the bolus reaches the stomach. The passage of the food through the esophagus has to be maintained to prevent it from entering into the windpipe or the trachea of the mammal.
Hence, the Trachea is covered with epiglottis to prevent food from entering which is a thin flap like structure acting as a barrier to the food to enter the windpipe.
