In higher doses, the arteries are also dilated by nitroglycerin, but primarily the veins. Vein enlargement results in the venous pooling of blood throughout the body. Less blood returns to the heart as a result, which lowers preload and lowers filling pressure. By lowering myocardial oxygen consumption, nitroglycerine lowers ischemia and alleviates pain.
