One piece of copper jewelry at 105°C has twice the mass of another piece at 45°C. Both are placed in a calorimeter of negligible heat capacity. What is the final temperature inside the calorimeter (c of copper = 0.387 J/g·K)?

Respuesta :

The final temperature inside the calorimeter is 85 degC .

Given ,

one piece of copper jewelry at 105 deg.C has twice the mass of another piece at 45 deg.C .

C of copper = 0.387 j/g.K

Let us assume ,

The mass of lighter jewelry is x at 45 deg.C

Then mass of the heavier jewelry is 2x . at 105 deg.C .

T  is the final temperature when equilibrium is reached . we have ,

energy lost by heavier object = energy gained by lighter object

=> 2x *C*(105-T) = X*C*(T-45)

=>2x *(0.387 ) *(105-T) = x* (0.387)*(T-45)

=> 2( 105-T ) = T-45

=>210-2T = T -45

=>3T= 255

=>T = 85 degC

Hence the final temp inside the calorimeter is 85 degC .
